Extended Care Programs
John Muir hosts two care programs: BEARS & Kids in Motion, as well as PTA-run IntraMUIRals.
BEARS
Berkeley's Excellent Academic Road to Success (BEARS) is the before and after-school care program run by the Berkeley Unified School District.
The BEARS program provides academic support and enrichment/recreation activities both before and after school.
Enrollment hours are: Before School: 7:00AM until the start of the school day, After School: End of the school day until 5:45PM
The BEARS programs are in operation at five (5) elementary school sites: John Muir, Malcolm X, Ruth Acty, Sylvia Mendez, and Washington.
At John Muir, the BEARS program gathers after school on the blacktop, climbing structure, and in the gymnasium.
The BEARS program is funded through the California Department of Social Services and all families must meet income requirements and demonstrate a need for care. All BUSD students are eligible to participate in the BEARS program, but families whose income exceeds the Fee Schedule limits are required to pay full cost.
For more information, visit the BUSD BEARS site
Kids in Motion
Kids in Motion is a fully state licensed, staffed child care program that offers kids the freedom to play in a safe, supervised environment.
The Kids in Mo program provides recreational activities both before and after school.
Enrollment hours After School are from 2pm-6pm, Monday-Friday.
Children can be bused from other schools to John Muir for after school care at Kids in Mo.
At John Muir, the Kids in Mo program gathers after school in the TK/Kinder play yard, on the grass field, under the redwoods, by the creek, and in the cafeteria.
Kids in Mo fees are based on the child’s grade and how many days a week they’re attending.

IntraMUIRals
The PTA organizes after-school enrichment classes called “IntraMUIRals” to provide opportunities for students to strengthen school connections and explore additional interests after school hours.
There are two semesters for IntraMUIRal enrollment: The first begins enrollment in September and the second begins enrollment in late January.
These classes are held at school, immediately after the regular school day ends. They last for about an hour.
IntraMUIRal semesters typically last for about 10 weeks.
Your child can still participate in them even if they are enrolled in BEARS or Kids in Motion.
The cost for each IntraMUIRal is set by the instructor and tend to be between $300-$400 for the semester. In each class, there are a limited number of PTA-sponsored spaces available.
Families sign up for IntraMUIRals through the Homeroom platform. Check it out here.
Class offerings vary from semester to semester. Recent ones have included Ceramics, Chess, Cooking/Baking, Glee Club: K Pop Stars, Golf, Plant Dyeing, and Soccer.
